Alexis Hernández Rueda (they/them)

Many of my clients come to me feeling like they don’t quite fit in or haven’t been fully understood by the people around them. Often, the way we see ourselves is shaped by stories others have told us about who we are or who we should be. Some of those stories can be uplifting, but others may hold us back. In therapy, I help you reconnect with your own voice, and work on empowering your most authentic self.

I work from a blend of approaches that focus on meaning, identity, narratives, and the mind-body connection. My style is warm, thoughtful, and culturally aware. I want you to feel safe and supported as we explore what’s going on in your life.

Some people I work with may be in the process of figuring out who they are or what they want, and they need space to be curious and open. Others know themselves well but are struggling to live fully and authentically in environments or relationships that aren’t fully affirming. I’ll help you explore the why underneath your experiences, attune to the discrepancies, and begin to writing a new story for yourself.

Creating a life worth living

growing in relation

I work with couples and families using the Gottman method. The Gottman’s have years of research that inform their approach. In our relational work, my goal is to improve the communication between clients. We will work on understanding the root of the attachment wound, while finding ways to heal in relationship to your loved ones. Ultimately, through building insight and communication skills, it is my goal to no longer be needed! I am also part of the Texas Two-gether program, which may reduce the cost of your marriage license after attending sessions focused on premarital counseling with me.

ABOUT me

I identify as a queer, first-generation, Mexican-American graduate based in Austin, Texas. I have a large part of my life in Texas, but I have roots in Durango, Coahuila and Guanajuato Mexico. My life story and identity motivates me to connect with the intersections others have lived. I am passionate about LGBTQ+ rights, intersectionality, liberation and decolonizing practices. I believe the personal is inevitably political as disparities in social support have roots in our systems. Without proper systems that are conducive of growth, we can feel stretched thin and powerless. Contextualizing our life stories with historical influences is fundamental to social and personal change, as power exists in the stories we have from ourselves and our ancestors.

I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Texas A&M University and my Master’s degree in Professional Counseling with a concentration in Marriage, Couples and Family Counseling from Texas State University. In my free time, I enjoy reading philosophy, gaming, spending time connecting with nature, or playing with my sweet orange cat, Reuben.

Alexis is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate in Texas, under the supervision of Alejandra Peña, LMFT-S, LPC-S.
